Class News 6th June 2025
Nursery News
We have been continuing to learn our Read Write Inc. sounds in Nursery and we have been doing activities around the new sounds. We have dressed up as pirates (p), went on an orange hunt (o), travelled around when we saw the go sign (g), make a c out of a caterpillar toy (c), kicked a ball (k) ⚽ and went out in the rain with umbrellas (u). ☔
We have been reading stories about journeys including ‘The Great Balloon Hullaballoo’, ‘Bun on the Run’, ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’, ‘Pip and Posy – The Super Scooter’
Class 1 News
We hope you had a lovely week off, it’s been wonderful to welcome the children back and hear all about thejourneys they’ve been on during their break. This has beautifully tied into our current learning theme and sparked some fantastic classroom discussions.
Literacy
We are continuing with our Read Write Inc. (RWInc) phonics program, The children are working hard on their sounds and blends, showing great enthusiasm and determination. We also enjoy daily story time.
Numeracy
In Year 1, we’ve been exploring pre-multiplication concepts by counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s. The children have also been learning to make even groups and arrays, laying the groundwork for multiplication.
In Reception, the focus has been on adding more to numbers up to 20. Through hands-on activities, the children are developing a strong understanding of number value and formation.
Concept: Journeys
Our current theme is ‘Journeys’. We’ve been discussing the different types of journeys we take—whether it’s to school, to the park, or even imaginative adventures! The children have been thinking about how we travel, what we might bring, and reflecting on their own learning journeys this year.
We’ve also been exploring the daily journeys of insects, observing their movements and habitats. The children have enjoyed building insect homes, learning what these creatures need to survive and thrive. These activities have sparked curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Our Rights
As part of our learning about personal development and wellbeing, the children have been exploring their rights. We’ve been focusing on their right to be safe, to learn, and to play. Through stories, discussions, and role play, the children are beginning to understand how these rights help them grow and thrive, and how they can respect the rights of others too.
Reading and Library Books
A gentle reminder to please return any library and reading books your child has borrowed. This helps us keep our collection fresh and exciting for all children to enjoy.

Class 2 News
Dear Parents/Carers,
We hope that you all had a lovely half term.
Literacy
This week we have continued with our set two and three Read Write Inc sounds, additionally reading the red and green words within the stories to go with the scheme. We have enjoyed listening to our daily stories.
Numeracy
In numeracy we have been counting in two’s, five’s and ten’s. We have used our counting to recite and write our time’s tables.
Concept Journey
We have continued learning about jellyfish. We drew and labelled the body parts and their life cycle. To complete our jellyfish we decorated our topic sea creature using different materials such as tissue paper and bubble wrap.
Music
On Wednesday we thoroughly enjoyed exploring and experimenting using different instruments. The instruments were a range of metal, wood and plastic, which we discovered gave off different sounds. Finally, we created musical pieces using varied speeds, volumes and patterns.

Class 3 News
The children are enjoying learning about their new topic, “migration”. The children have done some brilliant research about a bird of their choice that migrates on a chrome book and made a PowerPoint all about the bird they have chosen.
In numeracy, they have been learning about “statistics” in the form of different graphs and charts. The children have applied what they have learnt in a real- life context by collecting data on what insects we have in our school yard by going on a “bug hunt”. They have now learnt how to implement the data collected into Jit5 or Microsoft excel to make a chart to represent the data.
In literacy, the children have been practising their RWI sounds on a daily basis to improve their reading and spelling competency. In addition, the children have created a fact file about the bird they have chosen to research. Using this information, the children have written a fact file which they will use to help write their own non- chronological report about a bird that migrates in the near future.

Class 4 News
Welcome back to the final half term!
This is a special time for Year 6, as it is their last 7 weeks in primary school and we have lots to look forward to, including exciting sporting events and trips.
In literacy, we will be focusing on non-fiction texts, which will help enhance pupils’ reading and writing skills. In Numeracy, we will dive into decimals, percentages, and ratio, building on their understanding of these important concepts.
We will continue our studies on the concept of journeys, linking this to our exploration of rivers. This connection will deepen their understanding of geographical features and how rivers shape our landscape.
We also had a brilliant time at Sony Bridgend, where pupils experienced making a real film. They engaged in various roles, including acting, handling props, filming, and working with light and sound equipment. It was an invaluable experience that sparked their creativity and teamwork skills.
Additionally, we welcomed a nurse who spoke to the class about healthy diets and the Eatwell Plate, reinforcing the importance of nutrition in their daily lives.

As we approach the end of another busy term, I would like to take a moment to extend my heartfelt thanks to all parents, carers and staff for your continued support and hard work. Your partnership with us truly makes a difference, and we couldn’t achieve what we do without you.
Rugby and Football Tournament Success
A big thank you to Mr. Allen and all the parents who helped support the rugby and football teams during this term’s tournaments. We are incredibly proud of our pupils for their outstanding achievements. Their hard work and dedication truly paid off, and we congratulate them on their success. A special thank you also goes to Cymru Coaches for providing a free bus to the rugby tournament – your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Sponsorship for Sports Kits
We are currently working on securing sponsors for new rugby, football, and netball kits for our teams. Thank you to the companies who have already stepped forward to help support this initiative. We will keep you updated as we work to ensure our students have the best possible equipment.
Exciting Events in the Coming Term
We are excited about the many events we have planned for next term, including the Leavers Presentation, Nursery Graduation, and Sports Day. These are always highlights in our school calendar, and we look forward to celebrating the achievements of our pupils.
We also want to remind you about our Information Sharing Evening on June 30th, where we will be focusing on Read, Write Inc. This will be a fantastic opportunity to learn more about how we are supporting children with literacy.
End of Term Trip to Ninja Warrior
We are pleased to inform you that we have arranged an end of term trip to Ninja Warrior for the pupils in classes 3 and 4. Once again, we are incredibly grateful to Cymru Coaches for providing the bus free of charge. More details on the trip will follow soon.
Additionally, we are currently in the process of planning an end-of-term trip for classes 1 and 2. We will share more information with you as soon as it is finalised.
Christmas Planning
Although it may feel too early to mention, we wanted to give you advance notice that we have booked tickets for all pupils to see Aladdin at the Swansea Grand Theatre in December. It’s sure to be a magical experience for everyone!
Estyn Inspection Update
We are pleased to report that our recent meeting with Estyn went well. We continue to work closely with both Estyn and the Local Authority to develop our post-inspection action plan. Progress on this plan will be shared with all stakeholders termly, ensuring that we continue to improve and grow as a school.
Progress Meetings
Thank you to all parents who attended the recent progress meetings and for providing such valuable feedback. It was wonderful to hear that you appreciated the greater choice of times and the more detailed data on reading ages. For those parents who were unable to attend, our class teachers will be making phone calls after the half-term break to ensure that you are kept up to date with your child’s progress.
With the final report, which will be sent home later this term, you will also receive a more detailed breakdown of your child’s performance in numeracy and literacy based on the national progress tests that they complete each year. As a school, we are committed to sharing detailed reports with you to keep you fully informed of your child’s progress. Staff Training Day – June 2nd
Please remember that our second staff training day on Read, Write Inc. will be held on Monday, June 2nd. The school will be closed to pupils on this day.
Half Term Break
Finally, we would like to wish all our pupils and their families a very enjoyable half-term break. We look forward to welcoming the children back to school on Tuesday, June 3rd.

Football Festival
On Wednesday, we participated in the Women’s European Football Festival at Dwr-Y-Felin, where the Creunant Girls’ Football Team and the Creunant Boys’ Football Team showcased their skills in an exciting atmosphere. The behaviour of all pupils was superb, and despite experiencing wins and losses, their attitude remained excellent throughout the day. The event featured thrilling matches and goals, with some pupils playing a football game for the first time! We had a superb day!
Creunant Primary School Shines in the John Harris Cup!
We are delighted to share the fantastic news that Creunant Primary School enjoyed great success in the John Harris Cup Rugby tournament held in Glynneath on Friday. The team played with incredible heart, skill, and determination.
After a challenging day of rugby, we faced Cwmnedd in the final. The game ended in a draw, and according to the rules of the John Harris Cup, we’ll be sharing the trophy this year.
A massive well done to our brilliant squad:
George Thomas, Caleb Hicks, Evan Walpole, Osian Maunder, Dougie Watkins, Colton Thomas, Jake Say, Jac Bradshaw, Oscar Ribeiro, and Oscar Yates-Hand.
Each player gave 100%, working together as a team and showing true resilience and sportsmanship throughout the day.
We are extremely grateful to our parents for their ongoing support – from cheering on the sidelines to encouraging the children. We are very lucky to have such a talented group of players, many of whom are well coached through their respective rugby teams outside of school. This experience clearly showed on the field and contributed greatly to their success. Credit needs to go fully to the pupils, who were just amazing! I am sure have made both their parents, coaches and the staff at Creunant Primary very proud!
