Class News Friday October 3rd

Over the last couple of weeks we have been learning how to use our home corner. We’ve been practising laying the table and learning the names of the objects in the kitchen – cutlery, cups, saucers etc.. We created ‘Birthday Cakes’ for our friends and served them at the table.

We listened to the story ‘The Pig in the Pond’. We created a small world area with our wooden farm animals drawing on paper to set the scene. We drew a pond, a river and some grass. We made fences using lolly sticks and corks to create fields for the animals.

In the mud kitchen we did some colour mixing with red, yellow and blue food colouring in the water. We predicted what would happen if we mixed yellow and blue together – we get green. We created ‘Grass Tea’. We followed a recipe card – 2 scoops of mud, 5 acorns and 1 twig to make ‘Acorn Pie’.

We’ve been practising being independent taking out the bikes and returning them to the shed – counting them to check they are all there.

We’ve started to create our own collages using glue spatulas to add glue to pipe cleaners, cardboard shapes and shredded paper using our imaginations to create farm animals.

The teaching staff were really proud of our children performing for the Macmillan Coffee Morning. They did an awesome job!

Another great 2 weeks in class 2. Everyone has been working really hard in both their focused tasks and independent learning activities

Read Write Inc

We have all been working extremely hard in our groups. Some of us have continued to learn the speed sounds and to blend them together to help us read green words. We’ve then been practising to spell the words using our Fred fingers and a pen. Some of us have continued to blend and read larger speedy green words and completed lots of written activities linked to the story book.

Please remember to bring your reading books back to school every Monday so they can be changed and given back out on Thursday.

Numeracy

In our numeracy sessions, year 1 pupils have been learning all about counting objects. To begin with we sorted the objects into different groups including colour, shape, size and number of holes in buttons, then we counted how many where in each group. We even took our maths skills outside and completed this activity with natural objects, such as acorns, sticks and leaves. In year 2, pupils have been learning to count objects to 100 by making 10’s. To do this we had to group lots of different resources into sets of 10 to represent a number from 1-100, e.g. if the number was 32, we had to group 10 lolly pop sticks and tied them together with an elastic band to make 1 set of 10, we did this 3 times to make 30 and then placed 2 lolly pop sticks on their own next to them.

Welsh

As part of our concept healthy body healthy minds, we wrote about our favourite food in Welsh using the sentences ‘ Dw i’n hoffi…’ (I like…) and ‘Dw i ddim yn hoffi…’ (I don’t like)

Expressive Arts

This week we have explored the artist Rhian Eleri. We found out that she came from Carmarthen and she is an abstract artist. We looked at her pieces of art work then had a go at painting one. everyone tried really hard and they all looked fantastic!

Outdoor Learning

We enjoyed taking our P.E session outside this week, were we completed the fitness circuit on the infant yard.

As our outdoor provision has been developed we are looking at taking our learning outdoors more. I kindly ask that you send in a pair of wellies labelled with your child’s name on that you are happy to leave in school.

Macmillan

Well done to everyone who took part in the MacMillan coffee morning, Mrs Bevan said you all sang beautifully and read the poem clearly and confidently, da iawn!

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Williams, Ms Morgan and Mrs Amos.

Another busy and fun fortnight!

I think we’ll all agree that our trip to Glynneath Park was bendigedig! There was so much to do and so many fun new apparatus to try. A few of our favourites were the zip-lines, trampolines, group of swings in a circle (where we could chat easily, laugh and swing together with our friends). Thank you to our parents who came with us to support and ask us questions about our experiences. We found out that the park is inclusive & explained how. We made comparisons between Glynneath park and Crynant park. We have made a class collage of Crynant park, with our photos, words and phrases. We used our laptops to type our words. Then changed the font, size and colour. Some of us used a text box too.

In Maths we have continued with Place Value and moved onto numbers to 100 or 1,000 or 10,000. We have completed a few word problems using different equipment to support our understanding. We have continued to practise addition and subtraction in our morning ‘Fastest Gun’ session. Using the different mathematical language like: plus, add, total, sum of, take away, difference between, minus, etc…

We have continued with RWI, spelling and handwriting. In Literacy and Language, we are looking at poetry, rhythm, repetition and rhyme. We have also been looking at lines and stanzas in different poems, as well as comparing poems, using a colour-coded key.

In Welsh we have continued learning feelings. Then we taught the rest of the school in our Welsh assembly. We have enjoyed our Pod Antur videos and reading the Tric a Chlic books, as well as completing games such as Splat, Dice and Wordwall. The Criw Cymraeg announced the winner, Olivia Daniel, for the front cover design for our Welsh diary. So, each week someone in Class 3 will be coming home with our Class Mascot, Fflam.

Thank you for joining us in the MacMillan coffee morning. We enjoyed performing both our songs and our class poem about the zoo. We hope you all enjoyed too.

Thank you for all your support with your child’s homework.

Weather permitting, try to visit different parks or revisit Glynneath. Look at how inclusive they are. Test out the equipment and report back to your friends next week.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Davies.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We’re now a few weeks into the term, and Class 4 have been working on a lot of new skills.

Numeracy – Addition, Subtraction & Money Matters
Our numeracy sessions have moved on from place value to focus on addition and subtraction, including working with money. Pupils have been working on their addition and subtraction skills and over the next few weeks will be solving problems using coins and notes, applying their skills to real-life contexts. They’ll be using number lines, bar models, and column methods to support their calculations and explain their reasoning.

Literacy – Creating Suspense and Reflecting on Writing
In literacy, we’ve been exploring how to build suspense in our writing. Pupils have been experimenting with sentence structure, similes, and powerful vocabulary to create tension and atmosphere. We’ve also been reflecting on our work so far, identifying what makes our writing effective and how we can improve it. Pupils are learning to make inferences about characters and events, which is helping them become thoughtful and imaginative storytellers.

Concept – Movement for Change
Our concept work continues to inspire deep thinking and creativity. Pupils have been using Microsoft Forms to create quizzes about influential people who have made important changes in the world. This has helped us learn more about figures such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and Greta Thunberg, while also developing our digital skills. The children have loved designing their own questions and sharing their quizzes with classmates.

Drama Afternoon
On Wednesday, we enjoyed a fantastic drama session where pupils explored emotions, movement, and storytelling through performance. It was a lively and engaging afternoon, and the children threw themselves into the activities with enthusiasm and imagination.

Year 6 Visit to Llangatwg
Last week, our Year 6 pupils had the opportunity to visit Llangatwg. They had a brilliant time meeting teachers, exploring the school, and getting a taste of what secondary school life might be like. It was a valuable experience that left them feeling excited and reassured about the future.

Ed Shed – Spelling and Homework
Just a reminder that pupils can access their spelling and homework tasks via Ed Shed. Everyone has their login details, and we’ve practised how to use the platform in class. If your child has any trouble logging in or completing tasks, please let us know – we’re happy to help!

Thank You!
Thank you once again for your continued support.

Warm regards,

Mr. Allen
