Eco Warriors

Our aim is to see how much energy we can save in school by looking at how we recycle paper and plastic and we will be looking in each class to see if the lights have been turned off if the room is not being used. We also encourage people to only use the amount of water they need when they have a drink or wash their hands. To help our environment we have been working on the school garden and planted lots of new flowers and vegetables. We have also encouraged wildlife by building a bug hotel and hedgehog homes.

We are currently working towards our Platinum Flag.

This month (June 2021) the Year 5 pupil’s undertook an Environmental Review based on energy, waste, transport, water, healthy living, litter, marine, biodiversity, school grounds and global citizenship. They made some interesting discoveries and plotted some ways forward…

Energy – To find out more about our school’s energy meter and to find out more about how we can make our own energy.
Waste – To reinstate our compost bin next to the green house and to purchase some outdoor bins that could be kept next to the container.
Transport – Mrs Thomas had set a date with Chloe for a walk to school event but we will have to postpone this due to the pandemic.
Water – To work more closely with Mrs Lewis to find out exactly how much water we are using. We have had some new sinks and taps installed this year. To set up an area for a water butt outside so we are not using fresh water to water the plants.
Healthy Living – To remind the infant children to bring one healthy snack to school each day. We might make some posters to remind them. We would like to grow our own fruit and vegetables in school next year.
Litter – To create a new timetable for September for litter pickers. To purchase bins for outdoors.
Marine – Our next big step is to find out about plastic and how we can reduce what we are using in school.
Biodiversity – We would like to set up a scented/sensory area/garden in school. We would also like a school/class pet. We have been busy creating an outdoor pond as the small pond we had only contained salamanders. We counted at least 30. We are hoping that the new pond will attract more wildlife and we will be recording what we find out.
School grounds – We have a frame for a green house which is now going to become a den covered with climbers so we would like a new green house in which to grow seedlings. We found out that the police force are donating their riot shields to create green houses. We are hoping we can get one.
Global citizenship – We feel we would like to find out about more about foreign countries and learn a new language. We have spoken to our teachers to see if we can base one of our topics on this next year.
